Deep indigo blockout roller blind lowered from a brass-cased tube across double-volume glazing in a Morningside living room after dark

Roller blinds, made for Morningside's big glass

The workhorse of the range — a clean fabric panel on an aluminium tube, made to measure for every window from a compact cluster bedroom to a double-volume living wall.

Choosing the right fabric

The fabric decision matters more than the mechanism. In most Morningside homes we're choosing between three options, often on the same window plan:

  • Blockout — total light stop, for bedrooms, nurseries and any room where you want proper darkness on demand.
  • Sunscreen (3–10% openness) — a mesh weave that cuts glare and UV on estate-facing glass while keeping the view during the day. It reverses at night once your lights are on, so it suits living areas better than bedrooms on its own.
  • A light-filtering blockout roller blind lowered in a Morningside bedroomLight-filtering — softens direct sun and gives full privacy without either the total blackout or the daytime view.

The double roller

Most Morningside bedrooms with a view onto the estate grounds or garden end up on a double roller — blockout and sunscreen fabric sharing one bracket, so you switch between "block everything out" and "let the light in, keep the privacy" on the same window without swapping products.

Chain, cassette or motorised

Standard chain control comes with a wall tensioner fitted as a matter of course — an anchored loop is safer around children and simply lasts longer. Cassette or pelmet valances hide the roll and can be colour-matched to your frames for a cleaner line. For wide spans — the sliding-door walls common in newer Morningside builds — a single blind tops out at around three metres of fabric before you're better off splitting the run or motorising linked blinds; see our page on motorised blinds & automation for how that works in practice.

Where roller blinds work best

They're the right call for modern cluster and estate glazing, big sliding doors and tight-budget-to-premium fabric ranges, and they're the easiest product in the range to keep clean. On heritage freehold homes with smaller, more traditional windows, a timber venetian often suits the room's character better — we'll tell you honestly which is right for your window, not just sell you the one on the page you clicked.

What a roller blind costs here

Roller blinds are quoted per square metre, installed, and it is the fabric and the control that decide the figure. Manual, on a chain or a spring, in blockout, sunscreen or light-filtering fabric: R1,000 to R1,600 the square metre, with a double roller carrying two fabrics on one bracket near the top of that. Motorised, the same opening comes to R2,500 to R3,800, motor and control included.

A small window is charged at a minimum rather than by its area, because the tube, the brackets and the fitting visit are the same work at any width. Those bands are for planning: each window in your home is priced at the free measure and confirmed in writing before anything is ordered.
